Bed bug infestation is growing in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill region.
The parasitic invaders, largely non-existent throughout the 20th century, have made a huge resurgence across the US over the past decade. Researchers at the University of Kentucky and experts at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) note that the increased numbers of bed bugs are directly related to:
- Increased travel at home and abroad
- Decreased state/local pest prevention treatment programs
- Heightened resistance by new bed bug populations to common pesticides

- Bed bugs live anywhere humans reside. Bed bugs are parasites that require blood to survive. While it is true that bed bugs love to infest beds and mattresses for this very reason, they can be found living in wall voids, cracks and crevices, furnishings, clothing and carpet as well.
- Bed bugs know no economic boundaries. Bed bugs are not limited to low income areas. Any place, from dormitories and apartments to posh hotels and lavish urban offices, can fall victim to bed bug infestation.
- Bed bugs are not a sign of unsanitary conditions. Despite the stigma that pest infestation may carry, bed bugs can invade even the cleanest of homes, businesses and industrial spaces. Bed bugs are consummate hitchhikers. All it takes is one hiding in a suitcase, gym bag, purse or in the folds of linens to introduce infestation to a new space, even a space that is immaculately clean.
