Say Goodbye to a Flea Infestation

If you think fleas only affect domesticated animals like your dog or cat, we’ve got some bad news. Many animals can be carriers, including birds and other critters that may wander into your yard and come in contact with your house or pets. Plus, here’s another thing to think about – nearly half of flea infestations occur in households without pets. Paying attention yet?

Here’s the good news: if you suspect you may already have a flea problem, there are a few ways to find out. First, the obvious. Has your pet been scratching more than usual? Have you sighted tiny dark brown bugs on Rover’s skin when giving him a bath?

In addition to their home on your pet, fleas sometimes take up residence on upholstery and carpeted areas. Check these areas for signs of jumping fleas and for flea droppings (black specks that turn water red or brown). Finally, are you experiencing painful bug bites on your lower legs? Flea bites often leave behind tiny red marks and occur in groups.

So you’ve confirmed that these tiny pests have invaded your home. Now how do you get rid of them? Here are Triangle Pest Control’s recommendations:

  • Vacuum your home thoroughly and throw away used vacuum bags to prevent them from becoming incubators for flea larvae
  • Spray insecticide on upholstered and carpeted areas as well as areas where your pet spends time
  • Give your pet a flea bath, then make sure you guard him from further infestations by using a topical treatment or flea collar
  • Use insecticide in your yard as well, paying special attention to shaded areas and places your pet frequents
  • Remember that fleas reproduce quickly, so it is important to treat your house and pets on the same day
